A Life of Lines and Patterns
Born in London in 1738, Edward Edwards spent his early years working alongside a cabinet maker and upholsterer. Until he was eighteen, his hands were accustomed to drawing patterns for furniture. This early training in the practicalities of design stayed with him as he moved into more formal studies at a French Protestant school and later at a drawing school. His physical presence was marked by a small stature and limbs that remained distorted throughout his life, yet his reach extended far beyond his own frame.
He found his way to the academy in St. Martin's Lane in 1761, where he learned to draw from the life. By 1773, he had earned a place as an associate of the Royal Academy. His work often moved between the delicate precision of etching and the broader strokes of painting. In 1792, he shared his skill through a published set of fifty-two etchings. He also spent time in Italy, staying in Rome from July 1775 to September 1776, an experience that brought the influence of the Old Masters into his practice.
The Study of Perspective and Light
Edwards held a specific interest in the mechanics of sight. In 1788, he was appointed Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy, a role he kept for many years. He eventually wrote a treatise on this subject, sharing what he knew about the geometry of space. His paintings often utilized chiaroscuro to define form and depth. Some of his notable subjects included:
- The Death of Tatius
- Bacchus and Ariadne
- The Angel appearing to Hagar and Ishmael
- View of Brancepeth Castle, near Durham
- The Interior View of Westminster Abbey on the Commemoration of Handel
His work was not limited to the canvas. He repaired a ceiling painted by Sir James Thornhill at Roehampton and painted three ceilings for the Hon. Charles Hamilton at Bath. In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, he worked as a theatre scene painter, applying his knowledge of scale and perspective to the stage.
Records of the Painted Word
Beyond his own brushwork, Edwards acted as a chronicler of his contemporaries. In 1808, after his death, a volume titled Anecdotes of Painters was published. This book provided a record of the artists working in Britain during his lifetime. While some might find the collection loosely organized, it contains details that might otherwise have been lost to history.
His life ended in London in 1806. He left behind a body of work that ranged from portraits and landscapes to historical scenes and instructional texts on the very science of how we perceive the world through art.
