Early Life and Artistic Training

Evert Roos was born on March 2, 1876, in Lappträsk. His early years in Finland laid the foundation for a life spent deeply immersed in the visual arts, both as a creator and as a guardian of cultural history. He began his formal education at the School of Industrial Arts, where he studied from 1893 to 1896. This period provided him with the technical discipline necessary for his later work as a painter and museum curator.

Seeking to refine his skills, he moved on to the Finnish Art Association's Drawing School. He spent three years there, from 1896 to 1899, honing his ability to observe and translate the world onto canvas. This training was essential as he prepared to move beyond the borders of his home country to seek broader perspectives.

Between 1906 and 1909, his training took him across Europe. He spent time in Copenhagen, studying under Peder Severin Krøyer. During these same years, he also traveled to Italy, where he attended Christian Zahrtman's painting school in the mountain village of Civita d'Antino, located in the Abruzzo region. These years of study in both Denmark and Italy allowed him to absorb different approaches to light and form, shaping the perspective he would carry throughout his career.

Exhibitions and Professional Career

Roos was a constant presence in the Finnish art scene for many years. He participated in the Finnish Artists' Exhibitions throughout the early part of the century, showing his work in 1900, 1901, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1913, and 1916. His reach extended beyond Finnish borders, as his paintings were exhibited in Stockholm in 1929. Even after his passing, his presence in the art world remained, with his work being represented in an exhibition in 1954.

Beyond his own canvases, he dedicated much of his life to the stewardship of art. He began working as a part-time curator for the Porvoo Museum in 1919, a role he would hold until his death. By 1923, he had become the museum's curator, a position he maintained until 1933. During his time at the museum, he was responsible for founding the Albert Edelfelt rooms, ensuring that significant collections were preserved and organized for others to see.
