François Duchatel was a Flemish painter who worked in Brussels and possibly also in Paris. Born in Brussels, he likely began his life in the Southern Netherlands. His guardroom scenes, such as the one in the Musée Jeanne d'Aboville, depict soldiers engaged in activities like gambling and smoking amidst armor and weaponry. His ability to depict large groups in movement is also evident in his depictions of official ceremonies, such as the arrival of the Prince de Ligne.
