The Life and Career of Georg Muche

Georg Muche was a German painter, printmaker, architect, author, and teacher. His early art studies began in Munich at the School for Painting and the Graphic Arts, and he later moved to Berlin, where he became associated with Herwarth Walden and the Sturm artist group. During this period, he worked as an exhibition assistant at the Sturm Gallery and taught painting at the Sturm Art School from 1916 to 1920.

In 1919, Muche joined the Bauhaus art school in Weimar at the invitation of Walter Gropius. He served as the head of the weaving workshop from 1919 to 1925 and directed the preliminary course from 1921 to 1922. As a leading proponent of the Bauhaus architectural group, he was in charge of the 1923 Bauhaus Exhibition and designed the experimental house known as Haus am Horn.

Later Years and Teaching

After leaving the Bauhaus in 1927, Muche joined the faculty of Johannes Itten's Modern Art School of Berlin. He also taught at the State Academy for Art and Applied Arts in Breslau until his dismissal by the Nazis in 1933. Later, from 1939 to 1958, he held the position of artist director of the Master Class for Textile Art at the School for Textile Engineers in Krefeld.
