Due to the political climate in Nazi Germany and his Jewish-sounding family name, he underwent a formal name change from Kohn to Kohnert in 1937.

He served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Bremerhaven and held various leadership roles, including a position on the supervisory board of the Geestemünder Bank. Following the destruction of his villa and company assets during the strategic bombing of Bremerhaven in 1944, he experienced a period of professional banishment after the war, during which he devoted himself to painting.
