Born in Vienna, Austria, Kurt Hüpfner began his formal training in 1947 as a graphic designer at the Höhere Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna, completing his studies in 1950. His artistic development was deeply connected to an intensive engagement with modern and contemporary art movements, as he sought a personal form of expression. For much of his career, his creative output remained hidden from the public eye; he participated in his first group exhibition in 2006, followed by a museum exhibition titled "Kurt Hüpfner. Aus dem Verborgenen" at Belvedere 21 in 2016.

Themes and Techniques
The work of Kurt Hüpfner is characterized by themes of childhood memories regarding the Nazi regime, the constant threat of the wartime period, and the post-war era. A central motif in his oeuvre is the concept of "Omen"—a world of premonition and prophecy where people or objects are perceived as being charged with a magical power or an invisible force. His subjects often include mythological or legendary beings, as well as historical, literary, and political figures. He also frequently processed memories of war, terror, and current political events.
Technically, drawing served as the essential starting point for his work. His automatic drawing style touched upon the gestural-abstract aspects of informal art without ever reaching total abstraction. In his later painting, particularly from the early 1980s, his work showed parallels to neo-expressionist and neo-symbolist tendencies. His sculptures were often systematic three-dimensional translations of his drawings, frequently retaining the perspective distortions found in the original sketches.
