Leonida Caldesi
A Life Between Borders Leonida Caldesi arrived in London around 1850, moving through Genoa and Switzerland after leaving Italy. He was part of a larger movement of people seeking refuge during the Risorgimento. His brother, Vincenzo, fought as a colonel for Garibaldi, while Leonida sought a different kind of stability through the lens of a camera. He settled in the Bayswater area, establishing studios at Porchester Terrace and later at
13 Pall Mall East. These spaces were often shared with partners like Mattia Montecchi or Ernest Blanford. His life eventually led him back to Italy, where he lived in a villa near Bologna. The work of Caldesi was rooted in the technical shifts of the mid-nineteenth century. He worked with albumen prints, salt prints, and collodion negatives.
