The Earth and the Spirit Before his hands were permanently stained by the oxides of his craft, Milton Moon lived a life shaped by service and the airwaves. Born in Melbourne, he saw his early years interrupted by the weight of war, serving in the Navy until 1947. Following his discharge, he moved through Queensland and New South Wales before finding a sense of place in Brisbane. During these years, he worked within the realms of radio
and television, a career that provided stability while his true interests began to take root in the more tactile world of painting and drawing. It was in 1950 that the pull of clay first became undeniable. Through the guidance of Mervyn Feeney and Harry Memmott at Sandison’s Pottery, he began to learn the discipline of wheel-throwing.
