The Lawyer of Le Faouët
April 12, 1875, marks the beginning of Victor Robic in Bain-de-Bretagne. He moves from the Ille-et-Vilaine region to Paris, where the weight of law studies meets the atmosphere of the Académie Julian. This is a dual existence. By day, he navigates the rigors of legal education; by other hours, he pursues the brush. The transition from student to professional arrives in 1900 when he joins the bar in Lorient. He is an advocate, a man of precise words and structured arguments, yet his eyes remain fixed on the landscapes of Brittany.
The political trajectory follows a steady climb. In 1904, at only twenty-nine years old, he takes up the mantle of general councillor for the canton of Faouët. He moves into the mayoralty of Le Faouët in 1912 and eventually reaches the Palais Bourbon as a deputy for Morbihan from 1914 to 1928. His political identity is defined by a conservative republicanism, seeking a balance between the State and the Church. Amidst these legislative duties, the painter remains an active presence in his local community.
A Legacy of Collection
In 1913, a decision shifts the cultural landscape of Le Faouët. Robic initiates a project to gather works for a municipal collection within the town hall. He reaches out to the artists who frequent the area, asking them to contribute pieces to the local council. This effort brings together works from creators such as David-Nillet, Arthur Midy, Fernand Legout-Gérard, Charles Rivière, and Gabriel de Cool. By July 14, 1914, thirty works are ready for exhibition. This collection forms the early foundation of what is now the Musée du Faouët.
His artistic output includes various mediums and subjects:
- Watercolor: Works such as Kerozec and Le plateau de Sainte-Barbe, Le Faouët (1913) reside in the Musée du Faouët.
- Nature and Landscapes: Pieces like Les Roches du Diable and Une cour de ferme au Faouët capture the local terrain.
- Still Life and Interiors: The watercolor Bouquet de camélias and the painting Living room. Lorient demonstrate his range.
The life of the deputy-painter concludes in Le Faouët on July 2, 1941. He leaves behind a dual legacy: a career in French politics and a collection of art that ensured the local history of Morbihan would be preserved for future generations.
