Yet, his path was not one of easy progression through the established artistic circles of Sweden. As a member of the Pietist movement, a Lutheran sect that found itself at odds with the official church, he encountered a harsh reality of discrimination. This spiritual
conviction eventually forced him to leave his homeland behind in 1734, seeking a new life in Denmark.
