The Life and Art of Josef Wopfner
Born in Schwaz, Austria, Josef Wopfner began his professional journey in the craft of baking under his father. However, his innate talent for drawing led him to Munich in 1860, where he worked as a lithographer and a Stubenmaler. He eventually enrolled in the Antikenklasse at the Königliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, studying under Carl Theodor von Piloty and befriending Wilhelm Leibl. After completing his studies in 1872, he established his own studio in Landwehrstraße. That same year, he discovered the nature of the Chiemgau region, a subject that would come to define his entire artistic output. He spent his summer months on the Fraueninsel, capturing the landscapes of the area.
Wopfner was a co-founder of the Münchner Künstlergesellschaft Allotria in 1873, exhibiting works such as Kartoffelernte and Motiv im Chiemsee. His technical skill earned him several honors, including a gold medal at the 1890 Glaspalast exhibition and the Prinzregent-Luitpold-Medaille in 1906. He was named a titular professor by the Königliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in 1888 and was an honorary citizen of both Schwaz and Frauenchiemsee. He died in Munich in 1927.
