Shana Bestock: Bridging Education and Artistic Expression

Shana Bestock’s artistic journey began in Seattle, fueled by a profound belief in the transformative power of art – not merely as decoration but as a catalyst for personal growth and societal change. This conviction has shaped her career trajectory, weaving together roles as educator, performer, director, and international collaborator into a singular vision: fostering youth agency through creative engagement. From early explorations with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Seattle Public Theater to collaborations with Penguin Productions, Bestock honed her craft as an actor, immersing herself in diverse narratives and honing her skills of observation and performance. These experiences instilled within her a deep appreciation for storytelling’s ability to connect audiences emotionally and intellectually—a perspective that would later inform her work as an artist-in-residence and educational innovator. Recognizing the inherent potential within students – their curiosity, empathy, and capacity for imagination – she strives to unlock this potential through thoughtfully designed programs that prioritize inclusivity, fun, and unwavering faith in success. Her dedication to education extends far beyond traditional classroom settings. Partnering with organizations dedicated to sustainable development globally, Bestock leverages her artistic sensibilities to address pressing social issues. She champions youth ownership and access to resources, crafting experiences that empower young people to become active participants in shaping their communities and advocating for environmental justice. This commitment reflects a lifelong fascination with multicultural connections and cross-sector partnerships—a testament to her belief that art can serve as a powerful tool for positive transformation. Bestock’s artistic style is characterized by a sensitivity to detail and an ability to capture the essence of human experience. While specific stylistic influences remain somewhat elusive, her work consistently demonstrates a commitment to conveying emotion and narrative depth. Her pieces often explore themes of resilience, vulnerability, and the beauty found within imperfection—mirroring her own approach to fostering growth and encouraging empathy in those around her. She seeks to inspire young minds and champion the importance of creative exploration as a pathway toward meaningful change – a legacy that underscores the enduring significance of her work. Her ongoing involvement with CCTA in Austria exemplifies her dedication to blending artistic expression with practical solutions for global challenges. She attended the University of Chicago, where she worked in southeast Chicago — an impoverished area — in theater programs for elementary and middle school kids. And she decided I wanted to establish a theater in Seattle with vibrancy — a place where the mainstage and the youth education program are equal. At SPT, the mainstage and the youth programs share the same space and everyone has ownership of that space. The kids get on the stage, run the booth and are a part a professional theater. It really becomes a culture and a community—a “third place.” They learn what goes into making theater. It’s important to offer kids another language they can use to express themselves. Theater does that. It offers a space, a literal home away from home, away from school, a “third place.” They learn to bounce back from disappointment — that if they don’t get cast as the lead in one production. But we offer a lot of plays. They learn resilience.
