The Sausalito Vanguard
St. Paul, Minnesota, 1918. The son of Danish immigrants, Walter Kuhlman carries the influence of his heritage from the American Midwest to the coastal winds of Northern California. His early training at the St. Paul School of Art under Cameron Booth provides a foundation that soon expands toward Europe and the radical shifts of the mid-century. After a period as a medical illustrator for the U.S. Navy during World War II, Kuhlman arrives at the California School of Fine Arts in 1947. The atmosphere is electric. Under the influence of faculty like Clyfford Still, he enters a world where abstraction is the primary language.
The late 1940s see the formation of a specific, localized movement. Alongside Richard Diebenkorn, Frank Lobdell, John Hultberg, James Budd Dixon, and George Stillman, Kuhlman becomes part of the Sausalito Six. They share studios, models, and ideas in the waterfront community of Sausalito. In 1948, this group produces a landmark portfolio of seventeen lithographs titled Drawings. This collection marks a significant moment for West Coast Abstract Expressionism, establishing a center of gravity distinct from the New York School.
From Abstraction to the Figure
The trajectory of Kuhlman’s brush changes around 1960. The gestural energy and color field experimentation that defined his earlier years begin to yield to something more grounded. He moves away from pure abstraction toward a representational style rooted in American Figurative Expressionism. This new direction is not a retreat but an evolution, seeking to express archetypal and subjective emotional themes through the human form.
His canvases start to inhabit a space of enigmatic imagery. Figures emerge from shadows, often accompanied by animals or set within nocturnal landscapes. Works such as Don Juan in Hell and The Dwarf demonstrate this shift toward a more lyrical, yet still deeply expressive, figuration. He maintains an abstract substructure even as the subject matter becomes recognizable. The tension between the seen figure and the underlying form remains central to his practice.
A Legacy of Teaching and Print
Kuhlman’s life is defined by a dual commitment to the studio and the classroom. His teaching spans several major institutions, including:
- California School of Fine Arts
- University of New Mexico
- Stanford University
- Santa Clara University
- Sonoma State University
While his primary passion remains painting, his exploration of paper is equally rigorous. He masters intaglio prints and monotypes, using these mediums to push the boundaries of texture and light. His later years are marked by a dedication to monotype printmaking, creating works that bridge the gap between spontaneous mark-making and controlled composition.
By the time he retires from teaching in 1988, his work is anchored in permanent collections across the globe. From the British Museum in London to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Kuhlman’s presence in the canon of American art is solidified through both his physical works and his influence on the generations of students he guided.
