The light of Avignon
Jean-Paul Marie Saïn began his time with a brush in the studios of Avignon. He spent his early years studying at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Avignon, where he learned to capture the form of live models and earned a prize for drawing from the Musée Calvet in 1873. These early successes led him toward Paris. In the workshop of Jean-Léon Gérôme, he worked until 1877. During these years, his focus often turned toward the sea, capturing the movement of waves and the salt air in various seascapes.
After leaving the formal structure of the Parisian academy, he shared a studio with Paul Avril and others. His hands moved between different subjects, though the landscapes of the Rhône and the village of Les Angles remained frequent companions. He often painted en plein aire, sitting by the riverbanks alongside Pierre Grivolas and Louis Agricol Montagné to catch the shifting light as it fell across the water.
A life in movement
The artist found a sense of permanence in Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei. He lived in this village for twenty-five years, finding enough subjects in its surroundings to fill many canvases. His travels also took him to Algeria in 1887, where he observed new landscapes and light. While his work often focused on the natural world, his ability to observe people led him to create a vast number of portraits. In the village of Moisy, at a local inn, he sat with many faces, and it is believed he completed more than 1600 portraits in total.
His recognition grew through the years in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon, receiving an honorable mention in 1883 and a third-class medal in 1886. The Exposition Universelle in Paris brought him further honors, including a bronze medal in 1889 and another in 1900. In 1895, he was named a Knight in the Legion of Honor.
The final traces
In his later years, Saïn contributed to the decoration of the restaurant at the Gare de Lyon, now known as Le Train Bleu. There, he painted scenes from Avignon, bringing the imagery of his birthplace to the travelers passing through Paris. He returned to Avignon, where he died in 1908.
His presence remains in several collections and locations:
- Museum Collections: Musée d’Orsay, Musée Carnavalet, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
- Commemorations: A bronze bust in Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei and a street named after him near the Cemetery of Saint-Véran in Avignon.
- Final Resting Place: The Cemetery of Saint-Véran, where his tomb features a bronze medallion by Félix Charpentier.
