A Life in Visual Arts

Alan Uglow was a British visual artist who moved from London to New York City in 1969. His diverse practice included making paintings, objects, prints, photographs, and sound-and-visual installations. During his time in the United States, he was befriended by fellow painters Jake Berthot, Brice Marden, and Winston Roeth. He lived and worked in a loft on the Bowery until his death in Manhattan.

His career included several notable exhibitions and gallery associations:

Evolution of Form and Series

Uglow's body of work evolved through various series and experimental formats. At Lorence-Monk, he exhibited his "low rider" paintings and a four-panel piece titled Signals, which featured sound. At Stark Gallery, he presented a sound piece titled Coach's Bench, which was inspired by football.

Beginning in 1992 and continuing through 2009, Uglow produced a series of paintings titled Standards. These works were 7' x 6' and were installed on wooden blocks. This series was related to Portrait of a Standard, a series of silk screens that used the Standards paintings as their subject and utilized the same dimensions and blocks.
