A Meditation on Myth and Memory: Exploring Matthew Dicks’ “Numinous
Matthew Dicks' "Numinous" presents a striking visual paradox—a seemingly serene blue expanse punctuated by assertive geometric forms and the enigmatic presence of a solitary figure clad in armor. This artwork transcends mere representation, delving into layers of symbolism and inviting contemplation about identity, storytelling, and the enduring influence of folklore on artistic expression. The photograph captures a painting that embodies Dicks’ signature style: deceptively simple prose translated into visual language, resulting in an image brimming with emotional resonance.- Subject Matter & Composition: At its core lies a depiction of a warrior—a figure rendered in armor reminiscent of medieval or fantasy iconography—holding aloft what appears to be a staff or weapon. The deliberate absence of facial features is countered by geometric shapes and lines, skillfully employed to suggest the contours of a face or perhaps a mask. This compositional choice immediately establishes a tension between visibility and concealment, prompting viewers to consider themes of hidden identity and unspoken narratives.
- Style & Technique: Dicks’ artistic approach leans heavily into abstraction, prioritizing mood and feeling over precise detail. The textured surface of the painting—likely achieved through thick layers of paint—contributes to its expressive quality, conveying a sense of physicality and immediacy. This technique aligns with broader trends in contemporary art where artists strive to evoke emotion rather than simply documenting reality.
Historical Context & Influences
The artwork’s title itself – “Numinous” – speaks volumes about its conceptual underpinnings. Derived from Latin roots signifying divinity and sacredness, "numinous" encapsulates the feeling of awe and wonder experienced when encountering something profoundly significant or transcendent. Dicks' work draws inspiration from traditional storytelling traditions—particularly folklore—which often explore archetypal figures and narratives imbued with spiritual meaning. The inclusion of “Red Parrot Feather Water” as text overlay adds another layer of complexity, hinting at a deliberate disruption of conventional visual language and inviting viewers to engage in active interpretation.- Symbolism: The blue background symbolizes tranquility and contemplation, juxtaposed against the assertive geometric forms that represent resilience and determination. The armor itself serves as a potent symbol—representing protection, honor, and perhaps even vulnerability—while simultaneously embodying the grandeur of historical narratives.
Emotional Impact & Artistic Resonance
Ultimately, “Numinous” succeeds in capturing a profound emotional state: a blend of introspection and wonder. The artist’s deliberate erasure of facial features encourages viewers to project their own emotions onto the figure, fostering a personal connection with the artwork. Like many pieces from Dicks' oeuvre, it invites us to consider how stories shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us—a timeless theme that resonates across cultures and generations.- Interior Design Considerations: This piece would lend itself beautifully to spaces seeking a touch of contemplative elegance. Its muted palette and textured surface create an atmosphere conducive to relaxation and reflection, complementing styles ranging from Scandinavian minimalism to bohemian eclecticism.

The Weaver of Words: The Narrative Artistry of Matthew Dicks
To encounter the work of Matthew Dicks is to step into a world where the boundaries between reality and imagination are perpetually blurred by the power of the spoken and written word. Born on February 15, 1971, in the historic Blackstone Valley, Dicks emerged not merely as a writer, but as a modern architect of human connection. His journey began in an environment steeped in the richness of tradition and folklore, a foundation that would later allow him to master the delicate art of the anecdote. While many approach storytelling as a mere sequence of events, Dicks treats it as a visceral medium, much like a painter uses pigment to evoke emotion, utilizing deceptively simple prose to illuminate the profound complexities of the human condition.
His literary evolution is marked by a remarkable transition from the quiet observations of a teacher to the global stage of an internationally bestselling author. Dicks’s early academic pursuits at Bridgewater State University provided him with the intellectual scaffolding necessary to support his deep empathy for his subjects. This period of cultivation led to his 2009 debut, Something Missing, a novel that acted as a poignant manifesto on grief and remembrance. Through this work, he established a signature style: an emotionally honest exploration of identity and connection that avoids melodrama in favor of a haunting, quiet truth. As his career progressed, his bibliography expanded into a rich tapestry of fiction and non-fiction, including notable titles such as Milo, Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, and The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs.
A Symphony of Storytelling and Instruction
Beyond the printed page, Dicks has redefined the role of the storyteller in the contemporary era. He does not merely recount tales; he teaches the mechanics of enchantment. Through his influential non-fiction works, such as Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling, he has provided a toolkit for others to find their own voices. This pedagogical dimension of his work—rooted in his long-standing career as an educator—allows him to bridge the gap between spontaneous inspiration and disciplined craft. His influence extends into the realm of business and personal development, where he explores how narrative strategies can transform brands and individual lives alike.
The impact of Dicks’s artistry is perhaps most vibrantly felt in his live performances. A frequent participant in prestigious storytelling platforms like The Moth, he brings a theatricality to the oral tradition that resonates deeply with audiences in New York, Boston, and beyond. In these settings, the "technique" of his art becomes visible; it is found in the pacing of a pause, the vulnerability of a shared secret, and the rhythmic build-up of tension. His ability to command a room through nothing but breath and memory mirrors the mastery of a classical orator, ensuring that his legacy is not just found in libraries, but in the living, breathing moments of live performance.
Legacy and Global Resonance
The historical significance of Matthew Dicks lies in his ability to democratize the art of narrative. By translating his works into over 26 languages, he has ensured that his explorations of family dynamics, psychological landscapes, and the search for meaning transcend cultural borders. His work serves as a vital reminder that even in an increasingly digital age, the most profound human experiences are those shared through the ancient medium of story.
His achievements can be summarized by several key pillars of his career:
- Literary Versatility: The seamless movement between poignant fiction and actionable self-help guides.
- Educational Impact: Empowering a global audience to utilize storytelling as a tool for change through his Storyworthy methodology.
- Cultural Presence: Maintaining a significant presence in both the literary world and the live, oral storytelling community.
- Emotional Depth: A consistent dedication to exploring themes of grief, love, and the transformative power of memory.
