Rahman’s architectural language was forged in the crucible of elite international education. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from Calcutta University, he traveled to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he became the first Indian to complete a Master's in Architecture. It was during this formative period that he encountered the giants of modernism; working in the firms of luminaries such as Walter Gropius—the very heart of the Bauhaus movement—and William Wurster, Rahman absorbed the principles of the International Style. He learned to appreciate the beauty of structural honesty, the importance of utility, and the transformative power of geometric clarity. Upon his return to West Bengal, Rahman’s career blossomed with an immediate and significant impact. In 1953, Rahman’s move to Delhi opened a new chapter of monumental commissions.
