His formal artistic journey began at the Istituto d'Arte di Palermo, where he studied under the direction of the Roman painter Alessandro Morani. His early training instilled in him a deep reverence for the masters of the past, particularly the Renaissance ideals embodied by figures such as Raphael and Fra Angelico.
