The Poetics of the Ordinary
Sjaak Korsten operates in the quiet space between the seen and the felt. The work begins with the mundane—an object, a fragment of a scene, a specific arrangement of light. These are not mere observations. By isolating everyday items and placing them within unfamiliar contexts, Korsten strips away the noise of the functional world. The result is a shift in perception where the banal becomes a vessel for something deeper. There is a persistent search for truth and beauty hidden within the structure of the ordinary.
The practice is diverse, refusing to be tethered to a single medium. The artist moves fluidly between various forms of expression to capture a specific essence:
This versatility allows for a continuous investigation into how an object occupies space and how its presence can alter the viewer's understanding of reality.
Materiality and Meaning
The evolution of the work is marked by a commitment to the physical and the conceptual. In the 1990s, the output reached a point of significant institutional recognition. A notable piece from 1990, an Untitled work, found its place within the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo. This inclusion highlights a period where the artist's ability to transform the everyday into something of poetic value was firmly established. The focus remains on the tension between the object and its environment, using isolation to force a confrontation with the subject's inherent qualities.
