George Shepherd, often identified by the name George "Sidney" Shepherd, was a distinguished British draughtsman and watercolourist whose work serves as a vital visual record of a transforming era. He worked frequently with the renowned publisher Rudolph Ackermann, contributing to celebrated series such as Ackermann's Repository of Arts. These publications often featured the work of both George and his brother, Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, creating a familial legacy of topographical excellence. While his brother would eventually achieve widespread renown for capturing the essence of Victorian London, George’s contributions were equally essential in documenting the street views and architectural landmarks that defined the metropolitan landscape.
Beyond his individual contributions, Shepherd played a pivotal role in the institutional development of watercolor painting. In 1831, he stood as one of the founding members of the resurrected New Society of Painters in Watercolours, now known as the Royal Institute of Calibre.
