Cavallon was a student of Hans Hofmann, whose emphasis on color and geometric structure is evident here. But whereas Hofmann used strongly colored, opaque paints, Cavallon used scraping and glazes to create luminosity. Cavallon was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group and The Club, and maintained friendships with most of the Abstract Expressionists. Although his public reputation never developed, his work was always well-regarded by his colleagues.

He carried this duality not as a conflict, but as a source of nuanced understanding that would subtly permeate his artistic explorations. His initial years were marked by practical necessity; he worked in factories while pursuing private art instruction, demonstrating a dedication to creative growth even amidst challenging circumstances.
