In 1854, he traveled to England, a pilgrimage that allowed him to study the works of Joseph Mallord William Turner. This encounter with English Romanticism left an indelible mark on his technique, earning him the moniker "the American Turner." He adopted a style characterized by dramatic lighting, vigorous brushwork, and an atmospheric quality that captured the sublime power of nature. A Symbiosis of Literature and Sea
