The Hands of a Maker

Ron Mueck grew up surrounded by the textures of his family's business in Melbourne, Australia, where puppetry and doll-making were daily realities. This early familiarity with creating small, lifelike forms stayed with him long after he moved to the United Kingdom in 1986. Before turning to fine art, he spent years working as a model-maker for film and television. He was part of the creative world behind Jim Henson’s work, contributing his skills to projects like the character Ludo in the film Labyrinth and the series The Storyteller. These years were spent focusing on the minute details required to make something inanimate appear breathing and real.

In the mid-1990s, his focus shifted from the screen to the gallery. A commission in 1996 to create a small figure of Pinocchio for Paula Rego marked a transition into this new space. Soon after, he produced Dead Dad (1996–1997), a half-scale depiction of his recently deceased father. This work brought him attention during the 1997 Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
