Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Carlos Grethe was a painter, graphic artist, engraver, and university teacher. His formative years were shaped by his move to Hamburg at the age of five. Grethe pursued rigorous artistic training at the Karlsruher Kunstakademie, studying under Paul Düyffcke between 1882 and 1884, and again from 1889 to 1890.
