The Life and Training of John Hall

Born in Wivenhoe, near Colchester, in 1739, John Hall entered a world where the precision of the engraver's tool was as vital as the painter's brush. His early years in the United Kingdom laid the foundation for a career defined by technical discipline. He sought formal instruction under the French immigrant engraver Simon François Ravenet, a teacher whose influence helped shape Hall's developing hand. During these formative years of study, he shared a classroom with William Wynne Ryland, a fellow student whose own life would eventually take a dark turn toward forgery and execution.

Hall’s talent was recognized early by the established institutions of his time. In 1756, he was awarded a prize from the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, a distinction he repeated in 1761. These accolades marked him as a rising figure in the British art scene, proving his ability to master the intricate demands of copper engraving. While he would later be known for his portraits and various engravings, his early training established him as a versatile practitioner of both painting and engraving.

Professional Appointments and Engravings

Hall’s standing within the artistic community was marked by steady institutional recognition. In 1765, he was appointed a fellow of the Society of Artists, a position that preceded his leadership roles within the same body. His influence grew as he was elected to serve as a director of the Society of Artists in 1768, 1769, and 1771. This professional ascent reached a significant peak in 1785 when, following the death of William Woollett, he was appointed historical engraver to George III.

His technical skill was frequently applied to the reproduction of portraiture. He engraved several notable likenesses, including a portrait of Richard Brinsley Sheridan based on a painting by Joshua Reynolds. Beyond the realm of individual portraits, his hand was essential to the production of Bell's British Theatre. For this undertaking, he engraved the plates and provided illustrations of scenes, often depicting actors in their celebrated roles.
