The Life and Artistic Practice of Peter Bischof
Born in Vienna, Austria, Peter Bischof was a painter and graphic artist. His formal training began in his youth under Rudolf Szyszkowitz in Graz, followed by studies in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. During his time at the Academy, he was a student of Albert Paris Gütersloh. A significant part of his development involved participating in Herbert Boeckl’s "Abendakt," a legendary teaching session. Through this experience, Bischof created his first abstracted human figures, establishing himself as a representative of Austrian Informel.
His career included numerous exhibitions both in Austria and abroad. His works are held in various significant Austrian museums and collections, including the Albertina, the Dom Museum Wien, and the Lentos Museum in Linz. Beyond his work in fine arts, Bischof created frescoes and stained glass windows for Roman Catholic churches, with notable commissions located in the Prelatenhof of Melk Abbey, as well as in Stift Göttweig, Stift Klosterneuburg, and the Filialkirche Gmunden-Ort.
