Claudia Comte: Sculpting Memory and Embracing Biomorphism

Claudia Comte is a Swiss artist born in Morat, Switzerland in 1983. She operates across diverse mediums – sculpture, engraving, installation murals, and painting – forging an artistic practice rooted in meticulous observation and a fascination with the interplay between organic forms and industrial processes. Her work consistently explores themes of resilience, transformation, and the profound connection between humanity and the natural world.

Comte’s formative years were marked by exposure to influential artists like Brancusi and Jean Arp, whose sculptural explorations of abstraction and materiality profoundly shaped her aesthetic sensibilities. Simultaneously, she draws inspiration from popular culture – notably The Simpsons – recognizing the power of visual narratives to communicate complex ideas.

• Education: Comte earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from École Cantonale d’Art Lausanne (ECAL) and subsequently pursued an MA in Science of Education at Haute École pédagogique, Visual Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland.
• Technique & Philosophy: Her artistic approach prioritizes physical labor, utilizing tools like chainsaws as integral components of her creative process. Comte champions a method of measurement based on the artist’s own creation system, emphasizing methodical precision alongside playful experimentation.

Comte’s artistic vision centers on capturing the essence of natural patterns – waves, sonar, cacti, rock strata – and reimagining them within immersive environments. This approach reflects a deep engagement with ecological principles and seeks to communicate the intelligence inherent in biological systems. Her sculptures are characterized by their fluid shapes and dynamic movements, mirroring the rhythms of nature.

Her work consistently investigates how materials retain memory—the history of climates and landscapes—and utilizes technologies like chainsaw carving alongside sophisticated scanning techniques. Comte’s overarching aim is to foster a dialogue between artmaking and scientific understanding, prompting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of life and matter.
