The Clerk of Uglich
The brushstrokes of Ivan Vasilievich Tarkhanov emerge from the quietude of nineteenth-century Russia. Born in 1780, his life remains largely obscured by the shadows of history, leaving only the traces of his hand on canvas. Inscriptions on the reverse of his works offer a glimpse into a dual existence: he was a painter, yet he was also a registering clerk residing in Uglich. This intersection of administrative duty and artistic practice defines the fragments of his biography that remain.
His work finds its footing in the realm of provincial portraiture. These are not the grand, sweeping allegories of the imperial capitals, but rather intimate studies of the people who inhabited the Russian landscape. In 1831, his skill was recognized through portraits now held in the Yaroslavl Art Museum. These pieces, along with others, suggest a man deeply embedded in the social fabric of his time, capturing the likenesses of those around him with a steady, observant eye.
A Legacy in Portraiture
The presence of Tarkhanov in the annals of Russian art is marked by specific, tangible remnants. His portraits have moved from private homes into the custody of significant institutions. A joint exhibition involving the Hermitage Museum and the Kaliningrad State Art Gallery brought his provincial studies into the light of academic scrutiny, highlighting the importance of his contribution to early 19th-century portrait art.
His subjects vary, reflecting the diverse social strata of the era. The collections held at the Uglich Museum-Preserve and the Yaroslavl Art Museum contain the visual evidence of his career, including:
- Portrait of a Merchants Wife (1836)
- The works of the Surin family
- Portraits of the Shaposhnikov family
- Studies of individuals such as Malcev and Protopopov
By 1848, the record of his life reaches its end. He left behind a body of work that serves as a window into the provincial life of nineteenth-century Russia, preserved in the quiet halls of museums from Uglich to Yaroslavl.
