Randi Matushevitz: A Visionary of Dark Fairy Tales

Randi Chaplin Matushevitz (born in Rochester, New York in 1965) is an American artist recognized for her distinctive approach to portraiture and mixed media sculpture—characterized by ‘charcoal, ink, pastel, spray-paint, and acrylic; graffiti-like mark-making, gestural strokes, collage-like stencils’—whose “moody, urban-baroque vision evoke a dark fairy tale world.” Contemporary Art Curator Magazine noted, "Her recent portraits investigate uncertainty, and reflect the reactive mania or calm surrounding layers of wear and tear on the soul..." Matushevitz's artistic journey began unexpectedly when she took a drawing class thinking “it would be easy,” discovering instead a profound connection between physical process and inner experience. This serendipitous encounter profoundly shaped her creative trajectory.

• Education: Matushevitz earned her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL and her Bachelor of the Arts at the California State University, Northridge.

Early Influences & Artistic Exploration

Before delving into large-scale installations, Matushevitz honed her skills through meticulous drawing exercises—a practice that mirrored her own emotional landscape. This formative experience instilled in her a deep appreciation for texture and materiality, informing her subsequent artistic endeavors. Her initial explorations centered on feminist themes, utilizing mixed media to confront societal norms surrounding privacy and personal comfort. These early works established a core preoccupation with exploring the human condition through symbolic imagery and unsettling subject matter—a stylistic hallmark that would persist throughout her career.

• Notable Installations: Matushevitz’s installations explored themes of vulnerability and connection, often incorporating sculptural elements alongside painted surfaces.

International Recognition & Exhibitions

Matushevitz's artistic reputation quickly grew as she participated in residencies and showcased her work internationally—spanning from Buenos Aires to Venice to Berlin. Her inclusion in the inaugural Global Art Awards garnered critical acclaim, highlighting her commitment to pushing creative boundaries. Furthermore, her paintings were recognized by institutions like MOAH Lancaster and Cleveland Clinic Las Vegas, cementing her place within the broader art landscape. The Venice Biennale 2019 marked a pivotal moment, presenting “Beyond the Veil, Women Art, Markers XL” alongside “We Are Humanity,” demonstrating her ability to engage with complex social narratives.

Contemporary Artistic Style & Recurring Themes

Matushevitz’s artistic style evolved from early installations to a focus on “narratives that echo life in the 21st century,” prioritizing broader social conditions. This shift culminated in her ongoing series of “ugly faces” portraits—a deliberate departure from idealized representations, aiming instead to confront viewers with uncomfortable truths about human emotion and experience. Drawing inspiration from artists like Goya, Kollwitz, Bacon, Dumas, and Condo, Matushevitz’s work embodies a commitment to exploring psychological depth and formal artistic variety—reflecting the profound influence of art history on her creative vision. Her exploration of shadow and catharsis underscores the importance of confronting vulnerability as a catalyst for personal growth.
