The Wandering Hand of Rotterdam

Born in the port city of Rotterdam, Antonius Hendricus Winkel, known to many as Toon, possessed a spirit that could not be contained by a single medium or a single city. His early years were shaped by the rigorous training he received at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam, a foundation that allowed him to eventually seek the light and wisdom of the Académie in Paris. This education provided the technical bedrock for a man who would eventually become a teacher at the Haagse Akademie van beeldende kunsten, passing his knowledge to the next generation of creators.

His life was one of movement and discovery. He did not merely observe the world from a studio window; he traveled through the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Greece, gathering the visual language of the Mediterranean and the European continent. This wandering was not aimless. It was a search for form and substance that would eventually manifest in a diverse array of artistic expressions. He was a man of many disciplines, a creator who found equal purpose in the delicate stroke of a brush and the heavy weight of clay.

A Multitude of Forms

Winkel’s talent was not confined to the canvas. He moved between the roles of painter, ceramicist, and sculptor with a natural ease, often working as a monumental artist or a maker of stained glass. His hands were as comfortable shaping ceramics as they were designing the glass that filters light into sacred spaces. This versatility allowed him to leave a mark on both the intimate scale of a drawing and the grand scale of architecture.

His artistic output was characterized by a specific approach to line and light, often leaning toward the Cubist style. His work frequently utilized expressive ink and watercolor washes to define his subjects. Some of his notable pursuits included:

  • The creation of cubist-style depictions of monasteries, such as those found in Athos.
  • The execution of figurative ink drawings, such as his 1959 work titled Straatje in Chenard.
  • The production of religious-themed works, including his 1961 piece, Pantocratoros.
  • The development of monumental works and stained glass designs.

The Quiet Legacy in Dordrecht

As the years passed, the wanderer found his rest in Dordrecht. Even as he settled, his influence remained through his memberships in various professional circles, including the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars and the Teekengenootschap Pictura. He was a man deeply embedded in the artistic fabric of his time, participating in the collective life of the Dutch art community through the Algemene Katholieke Kunstenaarsvereniging.

His work remains held in significant collections, such as the Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht, where his 1960 piece, Pieta, resides. Through his paintings, his ceramics, and his monumental designs, he left behind a record of a life spent translating the physical world into a language of form and color. He died in Dordrecht, leaving a legacy that spans from the small, expressive ink drawing to the grand, structural presence of stained glass and sculpture.
