The Lawyer of Liège
The life of Armand Jamar begins far from the easel, rooted in the rigid structures of law. Born in 1870 in Liège, Belgium, he follows the path his father envisions, securing a doctorate in law from the University of Liège in 1894. The courtroom and the legal text define his early years, yet a different calling pulls at him. He eventually leaves the legal profession behind to enroll at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Liège. Under the tutelage of Evariste Carpentier and Adrien De Witte, the precision required for law begins to transform into the fluid motion of the brush.
By 1904, Jamar settles in Schaerbeek, occupying the very studio once used by Constantin Meunier. This physical connection to a master of social realism anchors his early development. His first exhibition appears in Liège in 1900, marking the start of a career that would traverse the landscapes of Europe and North Africa.
Light and Atmosphere
The early canvases of Jamar are defined by the pursuit of light. He moves through the world as an Impressionist, capturing the fleeting textures of the coastlines in Brittany, La Rochelle, and Zeebrugge. His palette is bright, heavily influenced by the works of Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind. These influences manifest in his seascapes, where the interplay between sky and water takes precedence over rigid form.
His technique relies on the immediacy of plein air painting. He uses wide, free brushstrokes and impasto to build texture, often applying paint with both brush and knife. While much of his work focuses on the natural world, he also turns inward, painting interior scenes that reflect the tradition of Dutch genre painting. In these works, peasants and artisans are depicted within rooms cast in the soft, heavy shadows of candlelight.
The Shift to Expression
A profound change arrives after the First World War. The violence of the era breaks the light-filled serenity of his earlier Impressionist style. A new, more intense approach takes hold, moving toward Expressionism. His brushwork becomes broader and more forceful. Colors that were once merely bright become pure and violent. This period marks a departure from purely observational landscapes toward something more visceral.
The arrival of the collector Louis de Winter in 1929 provides a new catalyst for this evolution. Under this patronage, Jamar moves beyond the sea and the shore to explore heavy literary and metaphysical themes. He begins to translate the weight of the written word onto canvas, drawing from:
- The epic struggles within Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy.
- The legendary tales of Charles De Coster’s Thyl Ulenspiegel.
- The profound narratives of the Old and New Testaments, including the Way of the Cross.
By the time he reaches the late 1930s, Jamar has become a painter of deep psychological and spiritual resonance. He dies in 1946 in Saint-Gilles, leaving behind a body of work held in museums across Belgium and France, from Charleroi to Rouen.
