A Life Shaped by the American Landscape

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1872, Peter Lanz Hohnstedt began his path through the world of art under the guidance of Frank Duveneck and Victor Casnelli. His early years were marked by a restless movement across the American landscape, driven as much by necessity as by a desire to see new horizons. Before he was known for his brushes, he earned his living in more rugged ways, pearling the rivers of Arkansas and later working as a floor finisher in Memphis, Tennessee. These years of manual labor and wandering through riverbanks provided him with a direct, unmediated connection to the natural world that would later define his oil paintings.

The arrival of Hohnstedt in New Orleans around 1914 brought a significant shift in his fortunes. It was here that his talent caught the eye of a museum patron who offered him a room on a yacht, allowing him to study the swampy reaches of the Blood, Tickfaw, and Pearl Rivers. This period of focused observation allowed him to capture the quiet, watery edges of Louisiana with great precision. He worked alongside Clarence Millet during these years, finding companionship in the shared pursuit of capturing the Southern atmosphere.

From the Pacific Coast to the Texas Hill Country

Hohnstedt’s wanderings did not end in the South. His path took him through Los Angeles and eventually to Seattle, Washington, where he exhibited his work with the Seattle Fine Arts Society. However, it was his encounter with the Texas landscape that would ultimately anchor his legacy. In 1929, he entered the Edgar B. Davis competition, an event that brought him significant recognition when he won two prizes totaling thousands of dollars. This success drew him permanently toward the heart of Texas.

Settling first in San Antonio and later in the small community of Comfort, Hohnstedt found his true subject in the rolling terrain and varied vegetation of the Hill Country. He established a studio in downtown Comfort that welcomed visitors from across the country, often recording the names of those who stopped by in his guest book. His work during this era focused on the specific textures of his surroundings:

  • The twisting oaks and cypress trees of the local landscape.
  • The seasonal shifts seen in his Texas fall landscapes.
  • The rugged, expansive scenes of the Big Bend area.

A Legacy Carved in Oil

In 1933, the Southwest Texas Archaeology Society commissioned him to document the Big Bend area, a task that resulted in a series of large-scale paintings. These works were so significant that the Witte Museum purchased eleven of them in 1939 to populate the Big Bend Room. His ability to translate the light and flora of the region into oil on canvas made him a sought-after painter of wildflowers and river scenes.

Even as his health declined following surgery in the early 1940s, Hohnstedt remained tied to his craft. He settled on a farm near Comfort, where he continued to paint and teach from his sickbed until his death in 1957. His life ended much as it was lived—deeply rooted in the soil and scenery of the land he had spent decades observing. Today, his paintings remain held in important collections, including the Witte Museum and the San Antonio Museum of Art, preserving the specific character of the Texas Hill Country as he saw it.
