An Experimental Visionary

Robert Breer was an American experimental filmmaker, painter, sculptor, animator, lithographer, and film director. Born in Detroit, United States, he began his artistic career as a painter after studying at Stanford University and in Paris. A founding member of the American avant-garde, Breer is best known for his films, which blend abstract and representational painting, hand-drawn rotoscoping, original 16mm and 8mm film footage, and photographs.

During his time living in Paris from 1949 to 1959, he produced abstract experimental films and exhibited paintings and kinetic sculptures at galleries such as Galerie Denise René. His transition from painting to filmmaking was driven by a desire to move away from the rigid notions of the school of Mondrian, seeking instead a medium that allowed for constant change.

Breer’s extensive body of work includes various films, such as:

He taught at Cooper Union in New York from 1971 to 2001 and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1978. His contributions to cinema were recognized with the 1987 Maya Deren Independent Film and Video Artists' Award, presented by the American Film Institute. He died at his home in Tucson.
