Early Life, Training and Early Career
Kurt Teuscher was born on May 25, 1921, in Radonitz, in what is now the Czech Republic. His early years were interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served as a soldier. The conflict led to his period of captivity, a situation that only ended when he was released in 1948.
Following his release, Teuscher turned toward formal study. Between 1949 and 1953, he spent his time at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden and the Kunstschule Alsterdamm in Hamburg. These years of training provided the foundation for his transition from a soldier to a practitioner of visual design. He moved through these institutions during a period of significant reconstruction, focusing on the technical aspects of his craft.
After completing his studies, his professional path led him into the world of commercial graphic design. He worked in several German cities, including Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main. This period of employment as a graphic designer lasted for several decades, shaping his understanding of form and space before he eventually moved into his work as a painter.
Professional Career and Artistic Development
From 1954 until 1981, Teuscher worked as a commercial graphic designer. This period of professional activity took him through Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main. These years of graphic work provided a foundation for his later transition into pure painting. In 1982, he moved into a new phase of his life, working as a freelance painter. He practiced his art in Weilheim, Regensburg, and Selb, focusing on the development of his own visual language.
His work became closely associated with Concrete Art. He moved away from the functional requirements of graphic design toward a practice defined by clear, geometric structures. This shift allowed him to explore the relationship between form and space without the need for mathematical calculation or logical concepts. His presence in the art world extended beyond Germany, with his paintings appearing in exhibitions in Lodz, Zurich, and Paris.
His recognition within the art community included receiving the Kunstpreis des Landkreises Dillingen in 1995. His output during his years as a painter was extensive, including a significant collection of drawings that eventually found a place in the Kunstmuseum Bayreuth.
Technique and Artistic Style
Teuscher’s approach to the canvas was defined by a pursuit of clear and pure design. His compositions relied on a geometrically strict structure, where shapes and lines were organized with precision. This order was not the result of a rigid logical concept or a reliance on mathematical calculus. Instead, the arrangement of elements appeared to emerge from an intuitive sense of balance and spatial relationship.
The work often utilized acrylic on paper, as seen in his 1996 piece titled Untitled. His practice extended beyond large-scale paintings into a vast graphic estate, which includes 300 colorful drawings. These works reveal a consistent interest in how color and form interact within a controlled, structured environment. The precision of his lines and the clarity of his surfaces suggest a disciplined method of seeing.
Later Years and Death
In 2001, Teuscher moved to Selb in Upper Franconia, where he remained for many years. His presence in the region was marked by continued engagement with the local art scene, including exhibitions in nearby Rehau and Hof/Saale. His life in Selb lasted until 2015, when he relocated to Hof (Saale).
He lived in Hof until his death on December 14, 2016. He was 95 years old at the time. His passing marked the end of a long life spent navigating the shifts between commercial graphic design and the precise, geometric demands of his later painting practice.
