Life and Artistic Journey
Oswald Baer was an Austrian painter associated with the Neue Sachlichkeit movement. Born in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, his early life was marked by health challenges, including joint rheumatism and a heart condition that required him to use a wheelchair for two years. Despite these struggles, he remained highly productive. After briefly studying architecture in Vienna, he moved to Dornbirn and later attended the State University of Fine Arts in Weimar, where he was a student of Fritz Feigler and Walther Klemm. By 1929, he had become a master student at the Weimar University. His career included various exhibitions, such as those with the Weimar Secession, and he lived in locations including Capri and Jena.
Works and Legacy
Baer's body of work includes various mediums such as oil on canvas, watercolors, etchings, and drawings. His output was significantly impacted by the political climate of the time; in 1937, sixteen of his works were confiscated from museums in Erfurt and Weimar as "degenerate art," many of which were subsequently destroyed. During the later years of his life, he engaged in "inner emigration," creating folk-style frescoes for buildings in Jena, such as the Ernst-Abbe-Library and the Kupferhütchen tavern. His final works included a triptych for the Haus der Frau in Jena, which he was unable to complete before his death from a heart attack. His surviving works and those from his estate have been featured in posthumous exhibitions in Chemnitz, Jena, and Dornbirn.
