Pippo Rizzo, a leading figure of the Futurist movement in Sicily, portrayed his friend Giulio Cesareo on this canvas. He became emblematic of the contemporary man: the bold and deliberately static pose of a man wearing smart clothes stands out in the foreground against the powerful symbol of modern civilization of machines, symbolised by the shining train in the background.
