A Life of Pattern and Thread

Carolyn Goldsand lived her life through the textures of the world. Born in New York City on January 5, 1908, she began her professional years far from the sewing machine, working as a music and art teacher in public schools. Her hands were accustomed to the precision of musical notation and the careful application of pigment before they ever moved to drape fabric. In 1939, she attended the Traphagen School of Fashion, where she studied costume design. This period of formal training provided the technical foundation for what would become a career in American sportswear.

The shift toward textiles happened through a personal connection. In 1930, she married Harold Teller “Burt” Schnurer, a designer of bathing suits. As the postwar years approached, the demand for comfortable, stylish swimwear grew. By 1940, she moved away from teaching to focus on design. The business, originally known as Burt Schnurer Cabana Co., was renamed Carolyn Schnurer Inc. in 1946. This change marked her emergence as an independent force in the industry, moving beyond simple swimwear into a broader range of apparel.

Global Textures and Silhouettes

Her work was shaped by the physical materials she gathered during travels to distant places. She did not look toward European fashion houses for direction; instead, she sought out the specific weights and patterns found in other lands. Her collections often featured elements from:

  • Japan, where she studied kimono silks.
  • Morocco, bringing back vibrant textiles.
  • India and Turkey, for their intricate patterns.
  • Greece and Norway, for different structural inspirations.
  • The Andes, which led to her 1945 "Serrano Fashions" featuring the cholo coat and pollera skirt.

She approached these cultures with a researcher's eye. She spent time looking through museum collections to find details that could be integrated into a classic American silhouette. The goal was never to create a costume, but to use one or two subtle thematic details in the fabric or the cut of a garment. This method allowed her to maintain a sense of ease and functionality in her sportswear while introducing unexpected visual elements.

Recognition and Later Years

The industry responded to her specific way of working with several honors. Her designs appeared in the pages of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Life. She received awards from organizations such as the Coty Awards, The Cotton Council, International Sportswear, Miami Sportswear, and Boston Sportswear. These accolades reflected her ability to merge the exotic with the practical needs of midcentury women.

After leaving active fashion design around 1956, she transitioned into a role as a textile consultant for the J.P. Stevens Company. This allowed her to continue working closely with the raw materials that had always defined her aesthetic. She lived in Palm Beach, Florida, until her death on March 15, 1998.
