A Life Captured in Motion and Landscape
Manly Edward MacDonald was a Canadian impressionistic painter born in Point Anne, close to Belleville, Ontario. The son of a farmer and fisherman, his work focused on recording en plein air rural Ontario practices. His canvases often depicted the rhythmic labor of the countryside, including:
Beyond these rural scenes, he painted many portraits of local dignitaries and family members. While he primarily worked in oil-on-board or oil-on-canvas, his artistic range extended to pastels and various etching methods.

MacDonald’s formal training began at the Ontario School of Art and continued at the Albright School of Art in Buffalo, New York, and the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
