A Life Between Two Worlds

Born in 1881 in Tama City, Japan, Morita Tsunetomo lived a life defined by the shifting boundaries between Western and Japanese traditions. His early years were shaped by private education before he entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Koyama Shōtarō and Nakamura Fusetsu. This period of formal training provided the foundation for his initial pursuit of yōga, or Western-style painting. He was a man of many roles, contributing to the art journal Hōsun alongside peers like Ishii Hakutei and Yamamoto Kanae, and even finding work in the more commercial realms of manga and illustration.

In 1914, the trajectory of his career shifted toward the European continent. Traveling through France, specifically Paris and Brittany, he encountered the modern movements that would reshape his vision. The structured, rhythmic approach of Paul Cézanne left a lasting mark on his sensibility. He returned to Japan following the outbreak of the First World War, carrying with him a new way of seeing landscapes through a Western lens. This era of his work was marked by an attempt to reconcile foreign techniques with the local environment.

The Poet of the Plains

As time passed, Tsunetomo began to move away from the heavy application of oil paints. He found that the medium did not always harmonize with the humid climate of Japan or the temperament of its people. This realization led him toward nihonga, a style that utilized traditional Japanese media such as ink and paper. His later works often featured soft, wet brushstrokes and a narrow range of ink tones to capture the essence of the landscape.

He became particularly noted for his depictions of the Musashino and lakeside districts. By employing poetic brushstrokes of ink and wash, he earned the moniker “the poet of the plains.” His compositions often balanced verticality and horizontality with a steady, rhythmic hand. Whether painting a scene in Aizu or a riverside willow, his work maintained a certain subdued emotion. He focused on the natural world, finding beauty in the following subjects:

  • The changing seasons of mountain villages
  • Lakeside environments and ponds in spring
  • Summer landscapes and water plants
  • Winter rice fields and autumn mountain vistas

A Final Chapter

Tsunetomo’s later years were spent deeply immersed in the technicalities of his craft. In 1922, he helped found the Shunyokai art society, and by 1929, he held the position of Director of the Western Painting Department at the Imperial Art Academy. Even as he moved into leadership roles, his personal practice continued to evolve toward modified ink drawings. He also left behind written contributions, including an anthology of essays and a book on art instruction.

He passed away in Tokyo in 1933. His career remains a study in transition, moving from the structured influence of French modernism to the delicate, atmospheric qualities of Japanese ink painting. He did not merely adopt new styles; he integrated them into a singular way of observing the light and landscape of his home.
