Joseph Hirsch was an American painter, illustrator, muralist, and teacher whose life’s work served as a profound vessel for social commentary. Born in Philadelphia, United States of America, he emerged from a rich artistic lineage, having been trained in the Philadelphia realist tradition of Thomas Eakins. His journey through the art world was shaped by significant mentorships, most notably studying under George Luks in New York City. Through Luks, a founder of the Ashcan School, Hirsch was introduced to the principles of Social Realism, a movement that would become the backbone of his creative identity. This influence instilled in him a lifelong commitment to depicting the raw, unvarnist truths of everyday life, focusing on themes of civic corruption and racial injustice.
His early development was marked by an expansive curiosity about the world beyond the American coast. Following his studies, Hirsch traveled extensively, including a period of more than a year throughout Europe, with journeys that took him through Egypt, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean. These global experiences enriched his visual vocabulary, allowing him to return to the United States with a broadened perspective on the human condition. During the late 1930s, he contributed to the American landscape through the Works Project Administration, where he worked in the easel painting division and executed significant murals for various institutions in Philadelphia, including the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Office Building and the Family Court Building.

The mid-twentieth century saw Hirsch transition from a regional muralist to a vital pictorial war correspondent. During World War II, he embedded himself within the conflict, traveling through the South Pacific, Africa, and Italy. Between 1943 and 1944, he produced approximately seventy-five paintings and drawings that captured the immediacy of war. This period of intense observation allowed him to portray people as heroes in a deeply humanistic manner. While his work often addressed heavy social themes, Hirsch famously noted that he sought to reveal his beliefs without ever descending into mere propaganda, preferring instead to use an almost caricature-like exaggeration to celebrate the dignity of his subjects.

In his later years, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, Hirsch moved away from traditional perspective in favor of a more complex, layered composition. For artworks or reproductions larger than 105 cm (approximately 41 inches) on any side, the frame will be shipped as a kit, disassembled. This method ensures safe delivery and prevents damage during transport.
Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.
All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.
Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.
Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.
Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.
