Born in the Pretoria township of Lady Selborne, Michael Madimetja Teffo’s artistic journey is one defined by an innate connection to the natural world and a profound, self-taught mastery of form. His story began not in the halls of formal academies, but in the quiet landscapes of his youth, where he spent his childhood sculpting Marula wood with nothing more than a simple pen knife. This early intimacy with organic materials laid the foundation for a career characterized by a deep respect for the medium. Without formal institutional training, Teffo developed a unique methodology, often working with random chunks of wood and allowing the natural knots, grains, and inherent shapes of the timber to dictate the eventual form of his sculptures. To witness his work is to see a dialogue between the artist's vision and the living history held within the wood itself.A Legacy of Expression and Resistance
Teffo’s evolution as an artist has seen him move from early pencil drawings and pen and ink works to the powerful, tactile sculptures that have garnered international attention.
