Artist Biography
The Life and Legacy of Frederick Banting
Sir Frederick Grant Banting was a Canadian pharmacologist, orthopedist, and field surgeon. Born in Essa, Ontario, he was the youngest of five children. He was a medical student at the University of Toronto, where he specialized in surgery. During World War I, he served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery while attending the wounded under fire. He is most notably recognized for his co-discovery of insulin, a breakthrough that led to him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923.
Artistic Pursuits and Scientific Achievements
Beyond his medical contributions, Banting was an accomplished amateur painter who developed an interest in art around 1921. He was friends with members of the Group of Seven, including A. Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris. His sketches and paintings often captured the rugged Canadian landscape, including locations such as the St. Lawrence River in Quebec and various outposts in the Arctic. His work was noted for its connection to the landscape studies of his contemporaries, and his art has been preserved in collections such as the Banting House National Historic Site.

Scale
The original measures 21.0 x 27.0cm. Slide to your wall: every size keeps its proportions.
Pick from our preset sizes that match the artwork's original proportions.
Type the width and the height you need, to fit your frame or your wall. A print can only be cut, never made bigger than the picture, so a size with a different shape loses a part of the image. We send you a digital mockup to approve before we print anything. The picture shown on this page does not show the real cut — only the mockup does.
