A Life of Color and Light

Born in Berlin, Germany, Albert Birkle was a painter, draftsperson, and graphic artist. His artistic journey began under the guidance of his maternal grandfather, Gustav Bregenzer, a court painter known for landscapes in the Biedermeier and Realism styles. After serving as a soldier in the First World War, Birkle trained as a decorative painter before studying at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg. His early career saw him become a member of the Berlin Secession and later a student of Arthur Kampf at the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts.

Birkle's work evolved through various stages, from a religious-socially critical realism with New Objectivity traits to more atmospheric and monumental landscapes and industrial motifs. He was known for his ability to navigate between Expressionism and New Objectivity, often imbuing his subjects with a sense of the fantastic. His artistic output included significant works such as Große Kreuzigung and various portraits.

The Mastery of Glass and Light

A defining chapter of Birkle's career was his dedication to religious stained glass. Utilizing the Dallglas technique, he created luminous works for numerous churches, including the Christuskirche in Salzburg and the Stadtpfarrkirche zum Heiligen Blut in Graz. His mastery of this medium earned him international recognition, notably when he was commissioned to create a cycle of five large stained glass windows for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

In his later years, Birkle returned to oil painting, utilizing a bright palette that reflected his extensive experience with glass. His late works often revisited themes from his earlier decades, acting as a chronicler of his time through both biblical depictions and social commentary. He remained active in the art world until his passing in Salzburg.
