Early Life and Artistic Training

Antonio Fontanesi was born on February 23, 1818, in Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna. During his early training, he studied under the landscape painters Prospero Minghetti and Vincenzo Carnevali. His professional beginnings included work as a creator of theatre sets between 1841 and 1846, alongside his practice of painting landscapes.

Fontanesi participated in various artistic exhibitions across several cities, including Lyon, Turin, Milan, Florence, Genoa, and the triennial exhibition of fine art in Bologna. His paintings are characterized by the use of bold colors and European oil painting techniques.

Career in Japan and Legacy

In 1876, Fontanesi was contracted by the Meiji government to introduce European oil painting techniques to Japan. Serving as a foreign advisor at the technical fine arts school (Kobu Bijutsu Gakko), he taught his Japanese students, such as Asai Chū and Yamamoto Hosui, methods involving charcoal, crayon, and oil paints. He introduced Western concepts of perspective, anatomy, and sketching from life.

His influence on the development of modern Japanese Yōga (Western-style) painting is significant. Although his career in Japan was cut short due to illness, his impact remains through the work of his students. The National Gallery in London holds a series of his watercolors, showcasing his early work.
