The Life and Journey of Émile Simon

Born in Rennes, France, Émile Simon was a painter who began his artistic training at the École des beaux-arts de Rennes. His talent led him to the atelier of Fernand Cormon at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, where he earned the Prix de Rome in 1912. His early career was marked by diverse experiences, including a period in Cairo in 1913 where he served as a teacher, an experience that later inspired works such as La Porteuse d'eau du Caire in 1925. After serving during the First World War and recovering from the Spanish flu in 1917, he held a teaching position at the École des beaux-arts de Nantes in 1922.

Simon's life was shaped by significant personal events, including a motorcycle accident around 1930 that resulted in the loss of his left eye. He eventually settled in the Squividan manor in Clohars-Fouesnant, Finistère, alongside Madeleine Fié-Fieux, who served as his assistant and helped preserve his legacy. In 1970, following a stroke, he continued to paint using his left hand. Upon his death, his vast collection of 1,336 canvases was bequeathed to the Conseil départemental du Finistère and is currently managed by the Musée départemental breton de Quimper.
