Henry Gales, born in Accra, United Kingdom, was a prolific English painter who achieved considerable renown during the Victorian era. Primarily celebrated for his monumental portrait of the 1867 Derby Cabinet—a group depiction capturing the deliberations of Britain’s governing elite—Gales’ oeuvre reflects the artistic sensibilities of Norwich School and embodies the spirit of meticulous observation characteristic of the period. Early Life and Artistic Training

Daniel Gales, Henry's father, was a solicitor, while Mary Church, his mother, provided a stable home environment. Following formative studies at Norwich School of Design in the 1850s—where he honed his skills in capturing atmospheric landscapes and realistic portraits—Gales relocated to London in the mid-1860s, immersing himself within the vibrant artistic milieu of the city. The Derby Cabinet: A Landmark Achievement

In 1869, Gales married Sarah Richmond of Tasmania, forging a union that produced one child, Lilian. Sadly, Lilian succumbed to illness at the tender age of three, leaving Gales with profound grief. Despite this personal sorrow, he continued his artistic pursuits, exhibiting regularly with the Norwich Art Circle and maintaining a presence in Kelly’s Directory as “private resident, artist of Accra norfolk.”

Later Years and Artistic Legacy

Gales returned to Norfolk after his divorce from Sarah Richmond in 1896, dedicating himself to landscape painting and furthering his artistic development. He passed away peacefully in Great Yarmouth in 1897, leaving behind a substantial body of work that continues to fascinate scholars and collectors alike.
