The Life and Art of Peeter Sion
Peeter Sion was a Flemish painter who specialized in landscapes, history paintings, and genre scenes. His artistic output primarily focused on biblical stories, mythological subjects, genre scenes, and vanitas still lifes. He was a pupil of Frans van Lanckvelt, registering at the Guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp during the guild year 1636–1637. Sion is known to have worked in Antwerp for the Forchondt workshop, a significant exporter of Flemish art. Many of his works were produced on copper, a support that facilitated export from Antwerp to Spain, and subsequently to South America via Seville.
His style is characterized by a high quality of drawing and a preference for white modeling with traced shadows. His compositions often feature large figures and, in the case of his narrative works, may include different sequences of a principal story within a single canvas. Much of his work is located in Spain, including pieces found in the cathedrals of Valladolid and Málaga, as well as in private collections.
Symbolism and Vanitas
Sion is recognized for his vanitas still lifes, which reflect on the transient nature of earthly goods and the meaninglessness of earthly pursuits. In his Vanitas still life with skull, various symbols appear, such as:
These objects serve to reference the transience of wealth, status, and learning. In one such work, a drawing on the wall depicts Saint Jerome, the Christian saint who chose an ascetic life.
