In the quiet, mist-shrouded corridors of late 15th and early 16th century Japan, a profound spiritual introspection was taking root, far removed from the chaotic echoes of the Ōnin War. It was within this atmosphere of contemplative stillness that Kenkō Shōkei, known more intimately to history as sekkei, emerged as a pivotal voice in the Japanese artistic landscape. Born in the historic city of Kamakura around 1473, Shōkei’s life was inextricably woven into the fabric of the Kenchōji temple complex. As both a priest and an artist, his existence was a seamless blend of monastic devotion and creative expression, allowing him to shape a visual language that embodied the very essence of Zen Buddhism’s reverence for the natural world.

The foundations of Shōkei's artistry were laid through a unique lineage of craftsmanship. While much of his early life remains shrouded in the humble anonymity characteristic of monastic tradition, historical records suggest he was a student of the celebrated sculptors Unkei and Kaikei.
