A Life of Art and Study
Born in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France, Eugène Trigoulet was a painter, printmaker, and draftsman. His formal training began at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied under Henri Leopold Levy, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Albert Maignan, and Henri-Léopold Lévy. After graduating in 1889, he sought the prestigious Prix de Rome, receiving a mention in 1892 and ultimately winning the second grand prize for painting in 1893. This achievement allowed him to travel to the Villa Médicis. His travels also took him to Italy, Brittany, Spain, Algeria, and Bruges, from which he brought back numerous landscapes.
Beyond his personal practice, Trigoulet served as an instructor at the art workshops of the City of Paris until his death. His work was recognized by the Salon des artistes français and the Salon des peintres orientalistes français. In 1912, the Galerie Allard in Paris hosted a major retrospective of his work.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
Trigoulet's oeuvre is characterized by a powerful and fine execution, often utilizing a palette of brown and black tones. His style is noted for avoiding anecdotal detail, instead using a brutal and schematic technique to indicate volumes—such as boats, carts, and figures—through large, dark masses. This approach allowed him to express the rugged life of fishermen in Normandy and Picardy.
