Early Life, Family and Training

Henry Bowler was born in the Kensington district of London on 30 November 1824. He grew up in a household shared with his parents, Charles and Frances Anne Bowler. His early years were shaped by the quiet rhythms of London life, long before his name became associated with the formal institutions of the city's art scene.

His formal training began with studies at Leigh's School. He later moved on to the Government School of Design at Somerset House to refine his technical skills. These years of study provided the foundation for a life spent navigating the structured environments of art education and administration. He developed a steady hand and a disciplined approach to his craft during this formative period.

In 1853, Henry Bowler married Ellen Archer Archer, the daughter of Thomas Archer, a vicar from Whitchurch, Buckinghamshire. Their life together eventually included three sons and one daughter. This family formed the private center of his world, even as his professional obligations began to pull him toward the various academies and departments of London.

Professional Career and Teaching

His professional life was defined by a steady movement through the institutions of British art education. In 1851, he took on the role of headmaster at the Stourbridge College of Art. This position was short-lived, as he soon moved to a teaching appointment at the school at Somerset House, the very place where he had once received his own training. By 1855, his responsibilities grew when he was appointed an inspector in the Science and Art Department.

The middle years of his career saw him deeply embedded in the administrative and instructional fabric of London's art scene. He spent nearly four decades, from 1861 to 1899, teaching perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts. His influence extended to the organization of major public events, including holding important posts in the organization of the 1862 International Exhibition. Later, in 1876, he moved into a leadership role as the assistant director for art at South Kensington.

Even as his official duties increased, his presence remained tied to the formal structures of the academy and the department. He continued his work within the Science and Art Department until his retirement in 1891. His career was a long sequence of appointments that shaped how art was taught and managed in the Victorian era.

Artistic Style and Key Works

Bowler focused his attention on landscapes and genre subjects. Between 1847 and 1871, he brought ten pictures to the Royal Academy, most of which were landscapes. His work often captured the quiet details of the natural world or specific moments of human interest. One of his most notable pieces is The Doubt: "Can these Dry Bones Live?" from 1854. This work appeared at the Royal Academy in 1855 and was later shown at the 1862 International Exhibition.

His landscape painting is well-represented in Evening at Stirling, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1857. This piece shows a road framed by tall trees in a forest, with a town visible in a mountain valley in the distance. The midground features the Highlands, specifically the area around Ben Venue as seen from the southeast. Such works demonstrate his ability to handle both the broad scale of a mountain valley and the immediate textures of a woodland path.
